BALANGA CITY—Bataan Gov. Enrique Garcia is seeking to increase from 9,000 to 12,000 the number of college scholars who will benefit from the province’s “Iskolar ng Bataan” scholarship program.

The governor and Bataan First District coordinator Gila Garcia have already conducted an orientation on the scholarship program for graduating high-school students in the six towns of the province’s First District.

The governor said the additional 3,000 college scholars will come from the first district in anticipation of the cooperation of the next representative of the district.

Gila Garcia is running as a congresswoman for the First District, which includes the towns of Dinalupihan, Hermosa, Orani, Samal, Abucay and Morong.

The governor also announced an increase in the stipend of each college scholar to P6,000 per year from the existing P5,000. The stipend, divided into two, is released every semester.

The Bataan scholarship program currently has 6,000 college scholars from the Second District and 3,000 from the First District.

In 2004, the governor and Bataan Second-District Rep. Albert Garcia hatched the Iskolar ng Bataan scholarship program. Annually, the provincial government allocates P20 million and another P10 million from the solon’s congressional initiative allocation for the scholarship program.

Mayor Joet Garcia of Balanga City doubled to P10,000 the annual stipend of each college scholar covered by the Iskolar ng Bataan residing in this city.

With the increase to P6,000 the annual stipend of each college scholar, the city mayor will again double to P12,000 per year the stipend of the 2,000 college scholars in the city.

Ramon Canas, scholarship coordinator, said the scholarship can be used in all universities and colleges, public or private, even outside Bataan.

He advised scholarship applicants to regularly log on to the web site of the province for announcement and activities of the Iskolar ng Bataan. Scholarship application forms can also be reproduced from the web site.

Aside from the Iskolar ng Bataan, the governor and the congressman are also paying the tuition and providing P1,000 stipend per year for each of the 1,800 students at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines Mariveles campus.
