BALANGA CITY—The Bataan provincial government is granting fingerlings to back-yard tilapia growers here.
Danny Abrera, fisheries division chief of the provincial agriculture office, said they are granting 500 fingerlings to each tilapia back-yard grower here per culture season. A culture season of tilapia lasts three to four months. He said after the grant of 500 fingerlings, back-yard tilapia operators pay them the subsequent fingerlings half of their commercial price only. Jun Resubal, agriculture technologist and in-charge of the hatchery, said their office is maintaining a tilapia hatchery in barangay Pantingan, Pilar town. He said a personnel of their division is manning the one-hectare tilapia hatchery. He said they are now hatching the latest strain of improved get-excel tilapia. The provincial government has been operating the tilapia hatchery since in the early 1980s. Abrera explained that a fishpond that is a half hectare and less in size is classified as back-yard operation. He said there are about 1,000 back-yard tilapia growers in the province. The biggest back-yard tilapia operations are found in sitio Maluwang, barangay Cataning in this city. He also said they are conducting seminars on tilapia culture and extending technical assistance to back-yard tilapia operators here. |
