Aetas give green light to railway project

After ironing out kinks with members of Idigenous People or the Kulot (Aetas) in the remote Sitio (sub-village) of Kanawan in Barangay Binaritan, in Morong. Bataan, the P50 billion Subic Clark Railway Project will push through next year.

The railway system from Clark will traverse some 73.8 kilometers passing through a good portion of Aetas’ ancestral domain thereby posing a not so minor problem with native populace.
To resolve the issue or issues confronting the residents, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Directors Rogelio G. Roque and Dr. Jorge Estanislao met with Rogelio Cayetano, IP mandatory representative, and barangay officials led by Erlinda Restum at the Freeport to settle the problem on the issue of ancestral domain.

“Wala naman silang pagtutol sa plano ng Clark Subic Railway project. Wala naman bahay na maaapektuhan sapagkat dadaanan lang ang kanilang ancestral domain,” said Roque. He said he advised the Aetas to keep planting fruits and root crops for their own benefit.
The railway system is one of priority projects under the “Build, Build, Build” program the commercial contract of which was jointly signed by the Philippine and Chinese government on June 16, 2021.
