Bataan LGU, BPSU launches 1Bataan Pawikan Conservation Alliance Network

For holistic approach for turtle conservation in the province, the Provincial Government of Bataan and BPSU will launch “1Bataan Pawikan Conservation Alliance Network”.

BPSU Vice President for Research, Extension, and Training Services Dr. Hermogenes Paguia said they met on Tuesday officers of Bataan PG-ENRO to formalize the partnership for the conservation.

Raphael De Leon, Supervising Environmental Management Specialist, explained in the meeting that for every 100 hatchlings released only 1 survives due to multiple environmental factors such as predators, poachers, and water pollution.

He pointed out that the current pawikan conservation program still has gaps to be enhanced for the purpose of sustaining the coastal and marine ecosystem services.

Karen Balbuena, the COIV/Technical Assistant, presented their study, “An Assessment of Sea Turtle Nesting Sites for the Establishment of a Marine Protected Area in Morong, Bataan”.

She explained the study aims to assess sea turtle’s nesting sites in Morong, using ecological and social indicators, for the subsequent establishment of suitable marine protected areas.

Paguia stressed the need to set a timetable of activities for the expected duration of completion of the turtle conservation efforts.
